SMK Negeri 2 Klaten dirintis pendiriannya pada tanggal 1 Agustus 1961. yang berlokasi satu kompleks dengan SKPN Jl. Merapi No. 11 Klaten. Berdasarkan SK Penegerian dari Direktorat Pendidikan Teknik No. 54/Dirpt/B.2/65 STM Klaten  secara resmi dikukuhkan pada tanggal 1 Januari 1965 sebagai Sekolah Teknik Menengah  Negeri  dengan menempati gedung baru di Jl. Kalimantan No. 11 Klaten. Pada tahun 1991 mendapat bantuan Bank Asean Depelopment Bank Loan 715 dengan menempati lokasi baru di Desa Senden, Kecamatan Ngawen, Klaten Kode Pos 57466

1. Mengembangkan institusi dengan menerapkan Sistem Manajemen Mutu ISO 9001:2008
2. Mengembangkan kurikulum nasional bersama pengguna tamatan serta memvalidasi sesuai tuntutan  pasar kerja dan perkembangan IPTEK.
3. Melaksanakan diklat dengan pendekatan Competency Based Training dan Production Based Trainin  untuk memberi peluang tamatan berwirausaha atau bekerja di industri
